Meet Dawna: Communications Coordinator

Meet another key player of the CAW team, Dawna, our Communications Coordinator. We sat down and asked a few questions.

What do you do at CAW?

I am the Communications Coordinator. I wear many hats. I create all the marketing collateral, manage social media, find key insights, and implement marketing strategies.

How long have you worked there?

I’ve been at CAW for over a month.

Where did you work before CAW?

Before, I worked at the Kingsway District Association, as a Marketing Coordinator. My position was similar to the one I am in now.

How did you end up working for a cannabis company?

A stroke of luck and fate, really. At the time I was freelancing and building my holistic health blog when I saw the job posting. I was eager to apply.

Did you have any hesitation about working for a cannabis company?

I was a little hesitant because I didn’t know what to expect.

What did your friends and family think?

My family is supportive - no matter what - even though some of them don’t entirely agree. My friends are curious and excited for me.

What do you like most about working in this sector? What is the most challenging? What has surprised you the most?

I am inspired by people’s stories on how they got into this sector. I love that I am learning so much and my interest in the cannabis industry is growing with the more I learn. Learning the specifics of cannabis can be a bit overwhelming because there is so much information to process. What has surprised me most is the pioneers in the industry are not the stoner stereotype but very professional and business orientated people.

What specialized knowledge have you had to acquire to work in this industry or in your current role?

I think to have a general understanding of cannabis, personal experiences, and passion for natural health makes it easier for you to model that in your work.

What makes CAW a great place to work?

Alison and the rest of the team! We have a great, supportive team that is easy to work with and we help one another to get things done.

As you look ahead, what excites you most about this industry?

The potential it has for growth and advancement. As there is more interest in the industry, there is more opportunity to expand the technologies, and help change the perspective of the way cannabis has been viewed.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career change into the cannabis sector?

If you are curious about the cannabis industry, do research, start joining related groups, and connect with people on Linkedin that are in the industry. Get your name out there and learn more about it!
